2.1.2 International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD)


The most commonly used nosological framework for the classification of diagnoses, disorders and health conditions is the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), which includes codes for diseases, signs and symptoms, findings, social circumstances, and related external causes and factors. Some significantly extended country-specific versions exist. ICD-10 Version 2016 is currently being revised and is intended to be replaced by ICD-11 (World Health Organization 2017b) in the mid-2018.


ICD-10 aims to list clinical conditions (diseases and symptoms) according to a framework of organ-specific similarities in symptoms and findings. It is used worldwide to code medical diagnosis and represents the basis of the reimbursement system in the majority of countries. ICD-10 is divided into 27 chapters (see Table 2.1).
