47 Suspicion of temporal arteritis. If steroids have been started empirically, temporal artery biopsy should be done within 10 days. See Chapter 3. 1. Obtain complete medical history, focusing on signs and symptoms of temporal arteritis. 2. Measure erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein. 3. If possible, discontinue aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents for 10 days before surgery. Discontinue warfarin 2–3 days preoperatively, if medically possible. 4. Query patient on bleeding tendencies. A useful screening question is asking if the patient had unusual bleeding after dental extraction.
