New York Ophthalmologic Society Celebrates 150 Years

Meeting on March 7, 1864, ten New York City physicians formed the New York Ophthalmologic Society (NYOS). Dedicated to the scientific advancement of ophthalmology, the Society continues to meet on a regular basis, making it one of the oldest continuous functioning specialist medical societies in the country. A reading of the minutes of previous meetings reveals the evolution of eye care from the early days of cataract surgery prior to the germ theory to the newest treatments of retinal disease. In its 150-year history, 250 individuals have been elected to membership, with a limit of 44 at any time. They have represented many of the innovators in our field. The NYOS is a vibrant group looking forward to its future and that of ophthalmic science with keen anticipation.
