1 Historical Perspective
Reduced to its simplest terms, suture is a combination of needle and thread. The term “suture” has its origin in the Latin word “sutura,” meaning “sewing.” Its earliest medical use dates back to at least 1100 BC, based on its presence in mummified humans found in Egypt. The earliest use of suture in ophthalmic surgery is not clear, but it likely began in the early 1880s with Hermann Kuhnt’s proposal to use fine silk thread to close corneoscleral incisions made during cataract extraction.
