Congenital Orbital Anomalies

Congenital Orbital Anomalies

MICROPHTHALMOS

Microphthalmos is a developmental disorder of the eye. The eye is small, and there are usually structural defects. The microphthalmos can be mild, or the eye can be so small that it cannot be seen at all.

Epidemiology and Etiology

• Age: Congenital

• Gender: Equal occurrence in males and females

• Etiology: Developmental defect with failure of the choroidal fissure to close as an embryo. This results in a small eye with structural abnormalities (Fig. 13-1).
