Chalazion Incision and Drainage
Indications
Drainage of chalazion that has not responded satisfactorily to medical management.
Preoperative Procedure
1. Treat underlying cause of chalazion formation (e.g., staphylococcal or rosacea blepharitis) with daily warm compresses, lid hygiene, diluted baby shampoo scrubs, or doxycycline as needed.
2. If skin incision is expected, advise patient of possible residual cutaneous scar.
3. Note: Select cases respond to intralesional corticosteroid injection.
Instrumentation
Scleral shell (optional)
Tissue marking pen (optional)
Chalazion clamp
Chalazion curette
Scalpel (e.g., #11 or #15 Bard-Parker blade)
Toothed forceps
Scissors (e.g., Westcott).
