13 Bloody Otorrhea For most patients, bloody otorrhea is particularly frightening. Fortunately, it is usually due to a benign process. As with other pathologies within the head and neck, though, it can be the harbinger of a more serious diagnosis; thus, prompt examination is warranted. Clinical examination will usually distinguish between one of the many pathologies that give rise to bloody otorrhea. Bloody otorrhea can be the result of an iatrogenic injury, such as that caused by an inserted foreign body (see Chapter 10).
