CANALICULITIS

Canaliculitis is a rare infection involving the proximal lacrimal system. The infection can be bacterial or fungal and is usually indolent. Diagnosising canaliculitis can be difficult because it often presents as a chronic conjunctivitis and not until late does the lacrimal infection become apparent.

Epidemiology and Etiology

• Age: Usually older adults

• Etiology: Some abnormality of the lacrimal system leads to concretion formation and a chronic infection. Intra-canalicular plugs have become a more common cause of canaliculitis.
