21.1 When the Nose Runs Like a Faucet


This chapter deals exclusively with anticholinergic nasal sprays. While there are metered-dose inhaler and nebulized versions of this medication, the formulations and their uses are not considered here. Anticholinergic nasal sprays are particularly useful for watery rhinorrhea, particularly in older people who complain of this type of symptom.



21.2 What Is This Class of Medication?


Anticholinergic medications act on the parasympathetic nervous system and block the binding of acetylcholine to muscarinic receptors on mucus glands. Simulation of parasympathetic fibers activates mucus glands to produce a watery discharge. This class blocks that activation.
