2 Evaluation of the Eyelid
Summary
The preoperative evaluation is essential to determine the needs of the patient and suitability for aesthetic surgery. We propose a simple patient questionnaire to assist in gathering information and a check list of important points to be covered in the evaluation.
Performing complication-free aesthetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures (and, for that matter, all medical and surgical treatments) is an ideal but unattainable goal. Nevertheless, it is a worthy pursuit to which we are all committed.
Thorough preoperative planning, careful surgical execution, and attentive postoperative management can minimize true complications or results that simply fail to meet patient expectations.
2.1 Preoperative Evaluation
This should include a thorough history as it relates not only to the eyelids but also to the patient’s general health, as outlined in Fig. 2-1. An assessment of the patient’s expectations and the surgeon’s understanding of them are essential and will help in avoiding postoperative disappointment despite a successful, complication-free procedure. Video imaging and review of pre- and postoperative images is an important part of this process.
A thorough examination, as outlined in Fig. 2-2 and the accompanying video must be undertaken. This is an essential part of procedure planning, predicting expected outcomes, and assessment of risk.
A full presentation of possible complications and management must be discussed as part of the informed consent process. Patients must be made aware of all complications including those threatening vision.
We believe that, thorough preoperative evaluation, appropriate surgical planning and skilled execution of the procedure are essential. Pre- and postoperative management should include educating patients about the importance of their role in care and compliance. Adherence to these principles will significantly reduce the risk of complications and unfavorable outcomes and enhance patient satisfaction.
If, despite our best efforts, complications arise, we trust that this volume will assist the surgeon in addressing them.
